What Good Vinyl Siding Installation Looks Like

Vinyl siding installation is straightforward when it's done right and a slow disaster when it isn't. The most common failure isn't the siding itself. It's what goes under it. Skipping proper house wrap, using the wrong nailing pattern, or leaving no expansion gap at the ends turns a product rated for decades into something that warps, cracks, and lets water behind the wall within a few Ohio winters. SOS Home Ohio installs vinyl siding the way it's meant to go on: house wrap first, nailed loose enough to move with temperature swings, trimmed clean at every penetration. If you're pricing out a siding project, call us at 614-913-3809 and we'll walk the exterior with you before anything else.

Cost on a siding job varies more than most homeowners expect. Square footage is only one factor. The condition of the sheathing underneath, how many windows and doors need wrapped, whether the existing siding is layered over older material, and the profile and thickness of the product you choose all move the number. A small ranch with clean sheathing and standard double-4 panels is a very different job from a two-story colonial with deteriorated OSB and multiple bump-outs. We don't price by formula, because the formula gets it wrong too often. We also handle full siding replacement when the scope warrants it. Every job is different. Contact SOS Home Ohio for an accurate estimate.

Why the Underlayment Matters More Than the Siding

The siding is the face. What's behind it determines whether the wall stays dry.

Most homeowners focus on color and profile when they're choosing vinyl siding. That's fine. But the decision that actually protects the house is what you install between the sheathing and the panels. A continuous layer of house wrap, lapped correctly at seams and taped at penetrations, is what keeps bulk water from reaching the wall cavity when a panel gets cracked by a stray branch or a hailstone. Without it, you've got an attractive exterior and an invisible moisture problem. We run house wrap on every job. We tape it at windows, doors, and utility penetrations. We don't skip it because it adds time. Some contractors do. If a quote you received doesn't mention underlayment at all, that's worth asking about before you sign anything.

Installation Process

How We Approach Every Siding Job

No two houses go the same way, but the sequence doesn't change.

  1. 01

Assess the Wall Before Anything Comes Off

We inspect the existing exterior, check for soft spots in the sheathing, and identify any moisture intrusion that needs to be addressed before new siding goes on. Installing over a damaged wall just buries the problem.

  2. 02

    Prep, Wrap, and Fasten Correctly

Old siding comes off cleanly. Sheathing repairs happen before wrap goes on. House wrap is installed with proper overlaps and taped at every penetration. Panels are nailed at the center of the slot with room to move. Thermal expansion in Ohio's climate is real, and a tight nail breaks panels.

  3. 03

    Trim, Flash, and Final Walkthrough

J-channel, corner posts, and trim pieces are cut tight and caulked where they meet dissimilar materials. We do a full perimeter walk before we call the job done, checking for gaps, unlocked panel ends, and anything that didn't land square.

Siding and Roofing in One Project

Contractors installing siding and roofing materials on a residential home exterior

Most contractors make you manage two separate schedules. We handle both.

A lot of the homes we look at in the Columbus area need more than siding. Older rooflines, worn gutters, and deteriorating siding often fail within a few years of each other. That's not bad luck. It's how houses age. If the roof has five years left and you're putting new siding on today, you'll be back out there with another contractor tearing into the work we just finished. We're set up to handle the whole exterior, which means we can sequence the work correctly, protect the new siding during roofing, and coordinate gutter installation so the drainage system actually matches what's on the wall. One call, one schedule, one walkthrough at the end.

What We Cover on Every Vinyl Siding Job

  1. 01

    Removal of existing siding

We take off the old material and haul it. We don't layer over unless the substrate is genuinely sound and the profile allows it.

  2. 02

    Sheathing inspection and spot repair

Any soft, rotted, or delaminated OSB or plywood gets replaced before wrap goes on. New siding over bad sheathing won't hold and won't last.

  3. 03

    House wrap installation

Full coverage, properly lapped and taped at all penetrations. This is the moisture barrier. It doesn't get skipped.

  4. 04

Panel installation, trim, and final inspection

Panels nailed to manufacturer spec, corner posts and J-channel cut and fit clean, full perimeter check before we leave the site.

Rated 5 Stars Across 49 Google Reviews

49 homeowners. Every one of them five stars.

We're not the only siding and roofing contractor in the Columbus metro. What we can tell you is that 49 homeowners who hired us left five-star reviews on Google without being asked twice. A lot of those reviews mention that Paul or Andrew took the time to explain what was actually wrong before recommending anything. That's the baseline for us. We don't push a full replacement when a repair is the honest call, and we won't hand you a quote without walking the exterior first. If you've had an estimate from someone else and something didn't add up, call us at 614-913-3809 and we'll give you a second look.

Vinyl Siding Questions We Get Asked Most

Should vinyl siding be nailed or screwed on?
Nailed. Screws don't allow the panel to move with temperature changes, and vinyl expands and contracts significantly across Ohio's temperature range. Each panel should be nailed through the center of the nail slot, not pulled tight to the sheathing. A snug nail that pinches the panel will cause buckling in summer heat. This is one of the most common installation errors we see on houses where the siding is only a few years old but already looks wavy.
What goes under vinyl siding before the panels go on?
House wrap is the correct answer. It's a water-resistive barrier that keeps bulk water from reaching the sheathing if a panel is ever damaged. Some older installs used foam board insulation as the only layer, which provides R-value but isn't a moisture barrier on its own. On a proper installation, you want house wrap as the continuous drainage plane, taped at all seams and penetrations, before any panels are fastened. Skipping this step is common on fast jobs. It's also the reason a lot of those jobs have rot problems within ten years.
How long does vinyl siding last on an Ohio home?
A properly installed vinyl siding job on a house with good sheathing and adequate ventilation should last 30 to 40 years before showing real degradation. The freeze-thaw cycles here are hard on materials that weren't installed with expansion room, so how it goes on matters as much as the product itself. Fade, brittleness, and cracking near the end of the product's life are normal. Impact damage from hail or branches can shorten that timeline, and Ohio gets enough hail seasons that it's worth checking the siding after significant storms.
Can new vinyl siding go over old siding without removing it?
Sometimes, but not usually. It depends on the condition of the existing siding and what's underneath it. Layering adds thickness that can cause problems at windows, doors, and trim. More importantly, if there's any moisture damage or rot in the sheathing below the existing panels, installing over the top buries it. We remove existing siding on most jobs so we can see the wall. If the substrate is genuinely sound and the profiles are compatible, we'll tell you. We won't add unnecessary demo costs, but we won't skip inspection to save time either.
Does new siding affect how gutters and trim need to be installed?
Yes, and this is an argument for coordinating the work if you're also replacing gutters or adding gutter guards. New siding changes the profile at the fascia and can affect where downspout elbows sit. If gutters are going on over old siding measurements and new siding is installed afterward, the fit is often off. We handle both, so we sequence it correctly. If you're only replacing siding and the gutters are staying, we'll work around them cleanly and make sure nothing is pulling away from the fascia when we're done.
Is vinyl siding a good choice for homes that also need roof work?
It's one of the most practical combinations we see. Both are exterior protection systems, and coordinating them means we protect the new siding during roofing work and make sure the drainage plane from roof to wall to gutter is continuous. A home that gets new siding and a new roof repair or full replacement in the same season is better protected than one where the work was done two years apart by two different contractors who never talked to each other.
